Biovita Agro Horticultural Expanded Clay is a lightweight and durable ceramic aggregate produced by firing natural clay at a high temperature. Its porous structure improves substrate permeability, supports root aeration and helps drain excess water away from the root zone.
The 8–16 mm granule size is ideal for creating a drainage layer at the bottom of pots, balcony planters and larger growing containers. Expanded clay can also be mixed with soil to improve its structure or spread over the surface as a decorative and protective mulch.

Applications
Biovita expanded clay can be used:
- as a drainage layer in pots and growing containers,
- as an additive to growing media,
- for vegetable and ornamental plant cultivation,
- when planting and repotting trees and shrubs,
- when preparing soil for lawns,
- as mulch around plants,
- in hydroponic and soilless cultivation,
- for green roof systems,
- as a decorative top layer on the soil surface.
Expanded clay as drainage for plant pots
A layer of expanded clay placed at the bottom of a pot helps prevent excess water from remaining in the substrate. It creates additional space for water drainage and improves air circulation around the roots.
It is particularly useful for plants that are sensitive to overwatering and for large pots, planters and garden containers.
Expanded clay as a soil additive
When mixed with the growing medium, expanded clay improves its structure and helps prevent excessive soil compaction. This allows more air to reach the roots and makes it easier for excess water to drain away.
The amount of expanded clay should be adjusted to the requirements of the plants and the desired level of substrate permeability.
Expanded clay for mulching
When spread over the soil surface, expanded clay creates a durable and attractive protective layer. It helps reduce moisture evaporation, limit weed growth and protect the substrate from adverse weather conditions.
Unlike organic mulch, expanded clay does not decompose and can retain its properties for many growing seasons.
Directions for use
Drainage: pour a layer of expanded clay into the bottom of the pot, then fill the container with a suitable growing medium.
Soil additive: mix the expanded clay thoroughly with the substrate, adjusting the quantity to the requirements of the plants.
Mulching: spread an even layer of expanded clay over the soil surface around the plants.
For hydroponic cultivation, rinse the expanded clay thoroughly with water before use.
